Q & A with Ned
Q: What was your most memorable personal performance?
A: "Ever since I started playing trumpet seriously as a youngster, my dad stated that he wanted me to play Taps at his funeral someday. About four years ago, that sadly came to pass, at the veteran's cemetery near Springfield Lake. My first attempt at a note was nothing but air... and then, with a second inhale, I nailed it and played the whole thing perfectly. I don't know if Dad had meant it that way, but I walked away from that funeral with the feeling that he had given me a chance to be a real pro, and I had succeeded."
Q: What made you decide to teach?
A: "I had always wanted wind instrument lessons as a young teen but didn't live near a teacher until I was 15; I had to do a lot of self-study. I like the idea that I can give young musicians direction, and provide some short-cuts... although, really, they seem like long-cuts at the beginning! I'm a big believer in both learning to play by ear and developing the best sightreading skills possible; both of them will greatly speed up the process of learning new pieces!"
Q:What musical groups are you performing with currently?
A:"I'll be with Nick and Ruell for the rest of my life, or so the old adage goes; I'm also starting a side project with Larry Lee and Randle Chowning of the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. I'll also be committing random acts of musical theater as often as possible, so stay tuned."
